About Yoga East - Highlands

Yoga East was founded in 1974 and is recognized by the IRS as a federally tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization.  We have two beautiful, well-equipped locations in Louisville, Kentucky.  Our staff averages 35-40 teachers, teaching 70 + classes each week in Mysore Ashtanga, Hatha, Flow and Gentle Yoga and Chair Yoga.  Our senior teachers have a minimum of ten years teaching experience.  Our most experienced teacher and director of teacher training, Laura Spaulding, has been practicing yoga for over 50 years and teaching yoga for over 20 years.  She is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 instructor and a Sharath Jois Level 2 Authorized Mysore Ashtanga instructor.  Yoga East hosts workshops with well-known expert instructors including David Swenson, David Garrigues, Kino MacGregor, Saraswathi Jois (2015), Sharath Jois (2003), Ramanand Patel, Doug Keller, Francois Raoult, John Friend, Christina Sell and others, and these are included in our trainings.

Yoga East's teacher training focuses on providing new yoga teachers with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of traditional hatha yoga including study of asanas, pranayama, bandhas, mudras, anatomy of yoga, and history, theory and philosophy of yoga.  We show you how to safely teach all kinds of students including seniors, pregnant women, people who are very stiff or very flexible.  We don't want to turn out "cookie cutter" yoga teachers. Instead, we help you to find your own unique teaching voice and style, and inspire your practice and your life.

Yoga East holds a very special place in my heart and feels truly sacred to me. The space, the teachers, and the way yoga is offered here carry a depth that goes beyond physical practice. Each session feels accurately and thoughtfully guided, with genuine care and respect for where every student is in their journey. What I have found at Yoga East is deeply transformative, and every time I come I leave feeling grounded and lighter. Thank you, Laura, Susan Reid and all the wonderful teachers and students of Yoga East who continue to help me learn and support this beautiful path. Truly grateful to this community 🙏
