About this retreat
Merry Waters teacher training program will take you on a deep journey of self discovery and empower you with knowledge handed down through the ages, from the sages. The program will not give you a script to follow, but will teach you about the practice of yoga from a deeper, integrated place of understanding poses, alignment, cleansing practices, self-care, and philosophical wisdom. It will give you a confidence to share your knowledge and meet your students where they are at in their yoga practice.
The yoga teacher training program aims to work compassionately with teachers in training, so that they may also shine their light into the world in a loving way. Rooted in a knowledge of nonviolent communication, helps students to learn a vocabulary so they may connect with feelings and needs.
The students vocabulary will certainly grow as they learn how to cue poses, sequence classes, and learn the language of the poses in Sanskrit as well as English. Students will learn about their anatomical body through fun coloring illustrations, drawing on each other, as well as palpation techniques to feel boney landmarks and see how alignment impacts the feeling of the poses.
LINEAGE & BIO
The lead instructor, Mary Wolters, has been teaching yoga in the Champaign-Urbana area for over 15 years. She began practicing when she was 16 years old, on her own. She continued to study yoga when she moved to Southern California. Upon her return to her midwestern roots, Mary took several courses at The Iyengar Yoga Institute of Champaign-Urbana. Iyengar was a student of Krishnamacharya in India, as was Sri Patabhi Jois, founder of Astanga Yoga.
Mary, then did an apprenticeship with Deb Lister of The Living Yoga Center. Deb had been studying Astanga Yoga and Prana Vinyasa Flow Yoga. At the end of her apprenticeship, she took her first yoga teacher training with Shiva Rea, called Embodying the Flow. Shiva Rea is the creator of Prana Vinyasa Flow. Mary has also taken teacher trainings with Shiva that include Fluid Power, Marma Nadi Chakra, Radiant Heart, Elemental Flow and Kalari Vinyasa.
In 2007, Mary completed her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification with Moksha Yoga Center's founder, in Chicago. She continued to study with Daren Friesen for many years, taking classes and assisting his yoga teacher training classes, in Chicago and India. She enjoys taking pilgrimmage to continue her study of yoga and connect with a broader yoga community.
Mary has also taken numerous teacher trainings with other internationally known instructors including Gary Kraftsow of Vini-Yoga, Aadil Palkhivala, Tias Little, Brian Kest, Seane Corn, Rusty Wells, Rodney Yee, Wade Gotwals, and Rich Logan. It brings her great joy to share the ancient, root teachings of yoga and apply them in modern life.
